Telangana Became Market For Fake Drugs: Threatening To Public Health

Hyderabad, May 24 (Maxim News): Many medicines we use for fever, cough, pain, blood pressure, diabetes and ultimately deadly cancer are in a state of unknown which are genuine and which are fake.

It is not possible to identify whether they are of good quality or adulterated. The worry is whether the medicine taken in the mouth or the ointment applied to the stool is working or not. In addition to these, expired medicines, unlicensed medical shops selling them with high prices, the health of the people in the state has become a godsend. It is noteworthy that all these worrying issues have been revealed in the raids and inspections conducted by the State Drug Control Council (DCA). DCA has been conducting inspections in Hyderabad and various districts for the past seven to eight months. On the one hand cases are being registered and fake medicines are being seized, on the other hand illegalities are going on arbitrarily. Fake medicines are brought to the state in heaps from other states while others are manufactured in the State.

Fake medicines manufactured in Kashipur and Kotdwar in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are freely entering the state. DCA busted a huge racket in this matter. Medicines are brought from there by courier companies and sold here. They include antibiotics, blood pressure and cholesterol lowering agents. Counterfeit pills and medicines of companies like Sunpharma, Glenmark Pharma and Aristo Pharma are being manufactured.

Unlicensed medical shops are popping up in the state. The same situation exists in Mandal centers and villages in the state including Hyderabad. Various nursing homes are also running medical shops without taking permission. In villages, RMPs are running medicine shops in their homes.

30-40 percent excess is being charged by printing false maximum prices for drugs with price ceiling. Recently more than 50 cases have been registered on such matters. It has been revealed that Wasfin-O 5 mg Ointment was sold at Rs. 140 instead of Rs. 113.60 in Beeramguda and Malkajgiri in Hyderabad. Ultracap-200 is being sold at Rs. 285 while ten tablets cost Rs. 247.70.

Ayurvedic medicines are sold to reduce diabetes, blood pressure, dissolve stones in the kidneys and gallbladder and finally cure life-threatening diseases like cancer. They are continuing to manufacture various cosmetic ointments at cottage industry level without permission and without cosmetic license.

Some of the illegal activities surfaced are selling drugs at arbitrary high prices even with price controls,  and illegal operation of blood banks. Collection of plasma from donors without consent. Storing things like insulin in bulk at room temperature. Buying bulk medicines without bills. Storage and sale of cough medicines against regulations. Expired medicines with lakhs of rupees.
