Osmania University: PhD seats are reserved for NET-qualified candidates

Osmania University | Hyderabad, August 23: Osmania University has announced major changes in PhD admission policy. From the academic year 2024-25, all PhD seats will be allocated only to National Eligibility Test (NET) candidates.

OU Registrar Acharya Lakshmi Narayan said at the release of CPGAT that 50% of the PhD seats will be reserved for those selected under the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) scheme and the remaining seats will go to NET passers.

Earlier, half the seats were filled by a combination of NET, JRF and OU own entrance tests.

In March 2024, the University Grants Commission (UGC) recommended that universities do away with entrance tests for PhD admissions and instead suggested using NET scores to simplify the process and reduce the student’s need to take multiple tests on it

The OU Secretary confirmed that these guidelines will be implemented this academic year. When asked about the State Eligibility Test (SET), he explained that passing the SET gives candidates access to assistant professor positions at degree colleges and universities, but does not guarantee PhD seats at OU.

However, a final decision on the admission process is still pending, as the state Higher Education Council has yet to decide how to fill the remaining 50% of seats. They are concerned about the issues not being covered by the NET and are having discussions to address this issue.

A retired OU professor questioned the limit of 50% seats for JRF candidates, arguing that if there are more JRF candidates, priority should be given and NET eligibility should be considered for them they have said it

Admissions for Category-I

This year, OU will fill 240 PhD seats. Half of these seats are designated for JRF nominees under Category-I. The notification for these admissions was recently released, and interviews are currently underway. The registrar expects the admissions process to be completed by the end of the month.
