Irrigation Minister Uttam Reacts To SLBC Roof Collapse
Hyderabad, Feb 22 (Maxim News): Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy confirmed that the accident during the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) works was caused by water and mud entering the tunnel. He stated that all individuals inside the tunnel at the time have been brought out, though more updates are expected as the situation develops. Contractors and other officials are present at the site, closely monitoring the ongoing relief operations.
According to officials, there were 50 workers inside the tunnel when the incident occurred. So far, 42 workers have been safely rescued, while 8 workers remain missing. Rescue teams are working swiftly to locate and bring them to safety.
The incident also led to a power outage in the tunnel, which was quickly resolved by GENCO officials. They reported that the tunnel boring machine became stuck in the mud, and a section of the tunnel roof collapsed by approximately 3 meters. Rescue efforts are continuing at full pace.
Ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy and Jupally Krishna Rao have left for the accident site by helicopter to oversee the situation and support the ongoing rescue operations.
The accident, which occurred at the 14 km mark on the left side of the tunnel near Dopmata Penta in Nagarkurnool district, left 10 workers injured after the sudden collapse of a retaining wall caused panic among those inside. The collapse was accompanied by a loud noise, further intensifying the fear among the workers.
Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities continue their efforts to locate the missing workers and ensure the safety of all personnel involved. (Maxim News)
