Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was leading in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll in Assam, according to initial counting trends. BJP candidate Debashish Sharma was ahead of AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal by 26,295 votes.
Sharma had secured 47,402 votes, while Ajmal received 21,107 votes. Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora was in third place with 6,544 votes.
According to the available figures, Sharma’s lead over Bora stood at 40,858 votes. The counting process was continuing, and these figures remained provisional.
BJP, AIUDF and Congress in Three Cornered Contest
Counting began at 8 am with postal ballots, followed by votes recorded through electronic voting machines (EVMs). Officials were counting votes at Dawson Higher Secondary School and Government Boys’ School in Nagaon district.
Both centres had 14 counting tables. Authorities deployed security arrangements and supervised the process at both locations.
The bypoll has emerged as a contest between the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. Sharma, Bora and Ajmal are the candidates representing the three parties.
Ajmal, a former MP from Nagaon, is seeking to regain the constituency. The seat became vacant after Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi switched to the BJP ahead of the Assembly election earlier this year.
Congress had won the Nagaon constituency in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The current contest is therefore significant for all three parties.
The final result will be known after counting concludes and election authorities formally declare the winner.
