90 Percent Of The Toddy Is Made With Medicine

Hyderabad, July 10 (Maxim News): Over the last 50 years, due to agriculture, the expansion of roads, and the growth of cities, many trees have been cut down.  Previously, palm trees were widely seen in the surroundings of Hyderabad city, but now they are not seen within 50 km of the city.  If there are not enough palm trees within 50 km of the cities, then the toddy shops should be closed.

Since the demand for toddy has been there since the beginning, instead of toddy extracted from natural trees, toddy is being sold with dangerous drugs like chloral hydrate, diazepam, and alprazolam, which cause intoxication.  This has affected the health of the people.  The latest incident is an example of this.  Four people died after consuming toddy for two to three days at toddy shops around Kukatpally, while more than 31 people are undergoing treatment in hospitals due to illness, the excise police said.

Many social activists are alleging that the steps taken by the excise department in the sale of adulterated toddy are futile.  Due to health problems caused by medicinal toddy, the joint  Andhra Pradesh government closed the shops that made and sold toddy in the city. After the formation of the Telangana state, the government opened the shops in the city in the name of employment for Geeta workers and started selling them.  There are allegations that since the excise department does not pay special attention to the sale of any toddy, 90 percent of the toddy is made with medicines.

The toddy shops run by the toddy societies in the city have a rule that they should only sell toddy extracted from the toddy trees, but no one is paying attention to it.  Toddy made with medicines is being sold in the compounds, and those who drink it are falling ill.  The excise department is aware of this, but is not paying attention.  Many are questioning how the government allows hundreds of toddy shops in a place where there are no toddy trees.

The majority of people who have migrated to the city for employment are consuming toddy for intoxication.  The toddy sold in the city is more  intoxicating than in rural areas, so the shops are crowded with toddy drinkers. The shopkeepers of the shops in areas like Kikatpally and Koosapet claim that 150-200 people come to toddy shops every day to consume toddy.  All the toddy shops in the city are located in areas where the poor, middle class and labourers ostly live (Maxim News)
