6.7 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands, No Tsunami Threat Issued
Jakarta/Hyderabad, July 14 (Maxim News): A powerful earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands early Monday morning, sparking panic among residents and prompting a swift response from authorities.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the quake occurred at 5:49 AM local time, with its epicenter located 177 km west of Tuvalu in the East Maluku province, at a depth of 80 kilometers.
Residents Flee Homes Amid Tremors
Shaken by the sudden tremors, residents rushed out of their homes, fearing aftershocks. Local authorities immediately launched relief and response measures in the affected areas. While structural damage has been reported, no casualties have been confirmed so far.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has assured that there is no tsunami threat from this quake, bringing some relief to coastal communities.
Minor Damages Reported
Preliminary reports indicate that at least 15 houses and two school buildings were damaged, although officials are still assessing the full extent of property loss. Emergency teams have been deployed to survey damage and assist affected families.
Earthquake History in the Region
The Tanimbar Islands, a cluster of around 30 islands in Indonesia’s Maluku province, lie in the seismically active “Ring of Fire”, making them highly prone to earthquakes. In January 2023, the region experienced a devastating 7.6 magnitude quake, causing widespread destruction. Monday’s earthquake is considered the strongest since that incident.
Situated between Timor to the west and New Guinea to the east, the region remains on alert due to its geological vulnerability.
Government on High Alert
The Indonesian government has urged citizens to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols. Authorities have also begun structural assessments of key public infrastructure and schools to prevent further risk.
