India’s First ISS Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Set to Return Home Aboard SpaceX Dragon
Delhi/Hyderabad, July 14 (Maxim News): In a landmark moment for India’s space ambitions, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS), is set to return to Earth after completing a historic 18-day mission aboard the Axiom-4 (AX-4) private spaceflight.
The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, carrying Shukla and his three international crewmates, will undock from the ISS at 4:30 PM IST on Monday, with splashdown scheduled for 3:00 PM IST on Tuesday (July 15) in the Pacific Ocean near the California coast.
Shukla, an Indian Air Force officer, was part of a multinational team that included mission commander Peggy Whitson (USA), ESA astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniwski (Poland), and Hungarian astronaut Tibor Kapu. This was Axiom Space’s fourth private mission, conducted in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX.
Scientific Legacy and National Pride
During his time aboard the ISS, Shukla conducted over 60 scientific experiments, ranging from biology to materials science, in microgravity. He also engaged in educational outreach, aiming to inspire young Indian scientists and students back home. The mission is bringing back more than 580 pounds of cargo, including valuable research samples and equipment.
In an emotional message from orbit, Shukla expressed gratitude to ISRO, NASA, Axiom Space, and SpaceX, and paid tribute to Indian students and researchers whose work supported the mission.
“Today’s India looks ambitious from space. Today’s India looks brave, confident, and full of pride,” he said. “And because of all these, I can say once again — today’s India still looks better than the whole world.”
A Milestone in India’s Space Journey
Shubanshu Shukla’s flight to the ISS marks India’s debut human mission to a foreign space station, setting a powerful precedent for ISRO’s future human spaceflight programs, including the highly anticipated Gaganyaan mission.
With this milestone, India cements its growing presence in global space exploration, and Shukla’s journey becomes a beacon of inspiration for the nation’s youth and future astronauts.
