Hyderabad: Rapido Driver Arrested For Assault, Religious Intimidation, And Spreading Communal Hatred On Social Media
Hyderabad, August 2, 2025 (Maxim News): In a disturbing incident that unfolded near the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Statue on NTR Marg, Saifabad Police arrested Mohammed Raheel, a 24-year-old Rapido driver from Shakargunj, Charminar, for assaulting two individuals and inciting religious enmity through a video circulated on social media.
Case Details and Arrest
The incident occurred on July 29, 2025, at around 3:45 AM, when Chinthala Neeraj (24), an IT employee, and his female Muslim colleague were intercepted by Raheel while on their way home. The accused wrongfully restrained, verbally abused, and physically assaulted both individuals, questioning the woman for being with a man from another religion despite wearing a hijab.
Raheel filmed the encounter and shared the video on social media platforms, including Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), in a manner that deliberately provoked communal sentiments. The video quickly went viral, exposing the victims to threats from extremist elements and potentially endangering their safety.
Police Action and Legal Charges
Following a complaint filed on July 30, Saifabad Police acted swiftly and registered an FIR under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Using CCTV footage and technical evidence, officers traced and arrested Mohammed Raheel near Charminar.
Raheel confessed to the crime during interrogation. His mobile phone and two-wheeler used in the offense were seized as evidence. He has been remanded to judicial custody under sections 196, 74, 79, 352, 115(1), 126(2), 131, 351(3) of BNS and Section 67 of the IT Act. Further investigation is ongoing, including identifying social media accounts that promoted the video to amplify communal hatred.
Authorities Urge Responsible Social Media Use
Police officials have emphasized the dangers of spreading unverified, inflammatory content online, warning that such actions can fuel communal tensions and jeopardize public safety.
“This is a serious case of communal provocation and violation of privacy. We urge citizens to act responsibly on social media and refrain from promoting divisive narratives,” said a senior police official.
