Guwahati /Hyderabad, Sept 3 (Maxim News) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that only three foreigners have been granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019. Out of a total of 12 people who applied, only three have been granted citizenship, he said. The Assam CM made these comments in the backdrop of speculation that lakhs of foreigners are likely to get citizenship through the CAA
The CM said that the case of 9 more people who have applied for citizenship is under consideration. There are allegations that about 20 to 25 lakh people will be given citizenship in Assam, but so far only 12 applications have been received, the CM said, and you should understand this yourself. The first person to get citizenship under the new CAA law was identified as Dulan Das. His age is 50 years. he got Indian citizenship in August 2024.
The government has enacted the CAA to grant citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Christians and Buddhists who have come to India to seek refuge from religious persecution in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. However, citizenship will be granted to those who have entered India before December 31, 2014 and have completed five years of residence. (Maxim News)
