Rowdy sheeter Sheikh Riyaz | Hyderabad, Oct 20: A major development unfolded in Telangana as rowdy sheeter Sheikh Riaz, the main accused in the sensational constable Pramod murder case, was killed in a police encounter in Nizamabad.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon and has sparked widespread attention across the state.

According to officials, Sheikh Riaz was under treatment at Nizamabad GGH Hospital after being captured earlier in the day from Sarangapur forest area, where he was hiding since attacking constable Pramod two days ago.

Police teams, who were on an extensive manhunt, surrounded the area and managed to detain him. However, during the medical examination at the hospital, Riaz allegedly made a dramatic attempt to escape.

Authorities stated that Riaz tried to snatch the firearm of an Armed Reserve constable who was guarding his hospital room.

In the commotion that followed, he reportedly attempted to open fire on the police. Reacting swiftly, officers returned fire to protect themselves and others present at the scene.

Sheikh Riyaz died on the spot, while one constable sustained serious injuries in the exchange.

Meanwhile, Telangana DGP Shivdhar Reddy addressed the media regarding the incident. He confirmed that the encounter took place when Riaz tried to flee from custody by snatching a gun.

“Riaz attempted to fire at the police. In self-defence, the officers retaliated, leading to his death,” the DGP stated. He clarified that reports suggesting Riaz fired shots before being killed were incorrect.

“Had he succeeded, several lives inside the hospital could have been lost. The police acted immediately to prevent a major tragedy,” he said.

The DGP also added that the encounter followed strict procedure and that the full report would be released after a detailed inquiry.

The death of Sheikh Riyaz, who was involved in the brutal killing of a police constable, has brought a dramatic end to a tense two-day manhunt that had gripped Telangana.
