Hyderabad, Oct 22 (Maxim News): The Hyderabad Police have intensified their crackdown on motorists using mobile phones while driving, warning that offenders will now face court proceedings instead of routine fines. The new enforcement measure aims to curb reckless driving habits that endanger public safety, especially during peak traffic hours.
Traffic DCP Srinivas said that the drive is being conducted on the orders of Commissioner of Police Sajjanar. He explained that talking on the phone while driving has become a widespread problem, particularly among two-wheeler riders who often do not wear helmets. “Phone in one hand, handle in the other — such irresponsible driving not only puts the driver’s life at risk but also endangers others on the road,” he said.
The DCP stated that under revised traffic regulations, those caught using cell phones while driving will be required to appear before the court. “Action will be taken based on whatever directions the court gives,” he added. This marks a significant shift from the earlier practice of imposing on-the-spot fines for the violation, reflecting the department’s commitment to enforcing stricter accountability.
Srinivas also warned that many motorists have been spotted watching reels, movies, and cricket matches on their cell phones while on the road. Treating cell phones like “mini TVs,” he said, causes dangerous distraction and has been linked to a rise in accidents. The police will therefore continue to deploy special teams during rush hours at major intersections to identify and act against offenders.
According to official data, more than 3,600 cases were registered in just one week against individuals found driving while using a cell phone. Police urged the public to drive responsibly and avoid distractions that compromise road safety. The crackdown signals the city’s determination to reduce accident risk and enforce zero tolerance toward distracted driving.
