Telangana Solar Villages Konijerla And Bhadrachalam Lead
- Konijerla and Bhadrachalam lead Telangana in solar energy generation
- Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana to fund renewable infrastructure
Telangana has gained national attention with two of its villages emerging as leaders in solar power generation. Konijerla village in Khammam district and Bhadrachalam in Bhadradri Kothagudem district are recognized as Model Solar Villages under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SMBY).
This program of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) rewards villages for their outstanding solar energy production with incentives to further build renewable infrastructure.
Both villages have demonstrated impressive solar capacities, with Bhadrachalam producing 2,098.15 kW of power from 208 solar plants, making it the top solar producer in Telangana.
Konijerla follows closely, generating 75 kW from 11 solar plants within the Khammam district. This makes these villages role models for using decentralized solar energy to achieve self-sufficiency in electricity.
The State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (REDCO) officials have finalized their recommendations and will soon submit formal reports for central government approval. P Ajay Kumar, REDCO District Manager, noted, “The initiative is expected to strengthen energy independence in rural areas while encouraging the use of clean, green power.”
The Rs 1 crore incentive allocated per selected village will be used to install solar systems at government offices, schools, and other public institutions, further enhancing local energy resilience.
This achievement highlights Telangana’s leadership in adopting renewable energy technologies. It also aligns closely with India’s national mission to increase solar power capacity as part of its green energy goals. The success of Konijerla and Bhadrachalam in solar generation demonstrates the potential for rural communities to embrace sustainability and reduce dependence on traditional energy sources.
