Congress Condemns BJP, BRS Over Azharuddin Issue

Hyderabad, October 30: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) spokesperson Syed Nizamuddin has strongly condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) for allegedly working together to block the induction of former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin into the cabinet of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
Reacting to the BJP’s complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer, which claimed a violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), Nizamuddin said the move reflected a deliberate attempt to deny political representation to minorities. He argued that Azharuddin, who once led the Indian cricket team and brought international recognition to the country, had earned the right to be a part of the Telangana cabinet.
The TPCC spokesperson alleged that both BJP and BRS shared a “covert understanding,” which was revealed earlier by BRS MLC K. Kavitha. He said that this coordination explained their shared opposition to Azharuddin’s appointment. “The BJP has no chance of winning in Jubilee Hills. Knowing this, it has fielded a weak candidate at the last moment only to benefit the BRS,” he said, accusing the two parties of “playing political games” to divide voters.
Nizamuddin further alleged that the BJP was not only working against Azharuddin but also exerting pressure on the Governor to delay the oath ceremony. He said the party’s complaint to the Election Commission was part of a larger conspiracy to influence the Jubilee Hills by-election. He called the move discriminatory, arguing that “the BJP is opposing Azharuddin only because he is a minority leader.”
Citing an earlier example, Nizamuddin pointed to December 2023, when the BJP government in Rajasthan inducted Surendra Pal Singh into the cabinet just 20 days before the Sri Karanpur by-election. “If it was not a violation then, how can the BJP object now? This exposes its double standards,” he said.
He concluded by appealing to minority voters to recognise what he described as a BJP-BRS alliance aimed at weakening the Congress. “Both parties are working together behind the scenes to deny minorities their rightful representation. The Congress government under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy remains committed to inclusive governance and will continue to uphold justice for all sections,” he said.
