  • Tension as police arrest Jogu Ramanna and protesting leaders
  • Protest over CCI’s cotton procurement policy turns confrontational

Adilabad/Hyderabad, Nov 5 (Maxim News): Political tension gripped Adilabad on Wednesday when Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders and activists staged a protest at the residence of BJP MP Nagesh, demanding immediate intervention over the Cotton Corporation of India’s (CCI) procurement policy. The protest, led by former minister Jogu Ramanna, escalated after police attempted to disperse the demonstrators, resulting in clashes and subsequent arrests.

The BRS leaders accused CCI, a central government undertaking, of causing severe hardship to farmers by rejecting cotton procurement citing high moisture content. The protestors, who gathered in large numbers, staged a sit-in in front of the MP’s house, raising slogans against the Centre and CCI. Police intervened to control the situation, but a brief scuffle broke out between the officers and the protesters. Subsequently, Ramanna and several other leaders were detained.

Speaking at the protest site, Jogu Ramanna strongly condemned CCI’s actions. He said, “CCI is doing injustice to farmers by refusing to purchase cotton in the name of moisture. They must purchase the crop regardless of moisture.” He added that recent rains had already caused heavy losses to cultivators and accused both the Centre and the state government of failing to protect farmers’ interests.

Ramanna criticized CCI’s purchase cap policy, demanding that the agency procure 12 quintals of cotton per acre instead of the current 7 quintals. He also alleged that the central government was adding to farmers’ woes by reducing import duties on foreign cotton, which he said was hurting domestic producers. “It is not right for CCI to impose restrictions when farmers are already struggling. We will continue our agitation until the problems of the farmers are resolved,” he declared.

The protest highlighted growing frustration among farmers in north Telangana over slow and restricted cotton procurement. BRS leaders said they would intensify demonstrations across districts if immediate corrective measures were not taken.
