India-Angola Ties: President Murmu Visits Luanda

President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Luanda on Sunday for a State visit to Angola at the invitation of President Joao Lourenco. Angola’s Minister of External Relations, Tete Antonio, and the Vice Governor of Luanda province, Jorge Miguens, welcomed her at the airport. The visit comes as India and Angola celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations, marking a milestone in bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the visit will further strengthen India-Angola ties. “President Droupadi Murmu lands in Luanda, the capital city of Angola. India and Angola are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year. This visit will further strengthen India-Angola bilateral cooperation,” Jaiswal posted on X.

During the visit, President Murmu will hold bilateral talks with President Lourenco. She will also attend the 50th anniversary celebrations of Angola’s independence on November 11. Officials highlighted that this is the first time an Indian head of state is visiting Angola and Botswana.

MEA Secretary for Economic Relations, Sudhakar Dalela, in a briefing held in New Delhi, said the engagement between India and Africa continues to grow across multiple sectors. He recalled that President Lourenco had visited India in May and extended an invitation to President Murmu to attend the independence celebrations. He noted, “President of Angola is currently the chairperson of the African Union. So, for all these reasons, the visit of Honourable Rashtrapati Ji assumes significance.”

Dalela further elaborated that President Murmu is scheduled to address the Angolan parliament and meet members of the Indian community in Angola. He underlined that both nations share close ties in various fields including energy, agriculture, technology, and infrastructure. He said the State visit offers an opportunity to review the entire scope of bilateral ties and expand cooperation in defence, trade, and people-to-people connections.

After concluding her visit to Angola, President Murmu will travel to Botswana from November 11 to 13 at the invitation of Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko. There, she is expected to hold talks, address the National Assembly, and meet the Indian community.
