Telangana High Court Declines Stay on Sarpanch Elections, Says Poll Process Cannot Be Halted

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has refused to grant a stay on the upcoming Sarpanch elections, making it clear that the electoral process cannot be stalled at this stage. The court’s remarks came during a hearing on petitions seeking postponement of the Panchayat Elections in view of reservation-related concerns.

During the proceedings, counsel representing the State Election Commission (SEC) argued that judicial intervention is not permissible once an election notification has been issued. The Commission maintained that the poll process must be allowed to continue without disruption.

Responding to arguments that elections should be delayed due to the absence of sub-category reservations, the High Court questioned the basis of the petitioner’s plea. The Bench reiterated that it had already expressed its view on the matter of reservations in connection with the recent government order introducing 42 percent reservations.

The court also examined aspects of G.O. 46, which deals with reservation guidelines for the Panchayat Elections, and noted that the electoral process carries urgency and cannot be indefinitely delayed over pending discussions on reservation policies.

The High Court’s observations reaffirm the position that elections must proceed as scheduled, despite debates surrounding the implementation of reservation sub-categories. The matter is expected to return for further hearings, but as of now, the Sarpanch election schedule remains unchanged.
