The Lowy Institute prepares this report every year. It measures the power of 27 countries and regions in Asia. The index uses 131 indicators across eight categories. These include military capability, economic relations, diplomatic reach and cultural influence. This year, the report said India has strengthened its position and has been recognised as a major power for the first time.

The report said India’s power has increased due to strong economic recovery after the Covid period. It also noted India’s growing political influence and better military capability. However, it added that India still faces a gap when compared with China. Meanwhile, the United States continues to lead with a score of 81.7, while China follows with 73.7. India stands third behind these two nations.

It also said Southeast Asian countries have shown slight improvement in their power ranking. The report explained that these shifts reflect long term trends in the region. (Maxim News)
