Umeed Portal Deadline Extension Sought For Telangana Waqf Data
- Shabbir Ali urges Centre to extend Umeed portal deadline for waqf property entries
- Advisor says institutions face delays due to technical issues and missing records
Hyderabad: Advisor to the Telangana Government for SC, ST, OBC and Minorities Mohammed Ali Shabbir has appealed to the Centre to extend the deadline for uploading Telangana’s waqf property details on the Union government’s Umeed portal. The portal is set to close on December 5. He asked for an extension of one year, or at least six months, and said thousands of institutions were under pressure due to technical delays, poor communication and growing anxiety among custodians.
Addressing a press conference in Kamareddy, he said many mosque committees and custodians did not receive clear information in time. He explained that messages did not reach several villages and towns, which left mosque managements, madrasa committees and other waqf-linked institutions confused. Therefore, he said the last days of the deadline created heavy stress for many groups.
He said he worked with officials from the Waqf Board, the Revenue Department and municipal authorities to help local mosque committees. In Kamareddy, he arranged three computers and sought support from Waqf inspectors from Hyderabad and Nizamabad. “People were anxious because the portal frequently went down. As soon as the server opened, teams began working, but there is not enough time to complete the details of all institutions,” he said.
He added that many mosques and madrasas feared that their properties might not show on the portal without an extension. “People are worried whether their mosques will remain registered if the entries are not uploaded in time. To remove this fear, the Union government must grant an extension of at least six months, preferably one year,” he said. He noted that he had discussed the issue with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Telangana MPs. The chief minister’s letter seeking an extension was sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with copies sent to the Ministry of Minority Affairs and MPs.
Meanwhile, he said several institutions were entering basic details even if documents were incomplete. He explained that some mosques in his own constituency also faced delays. He linked the problem to gaps in old records, since many waqf properties were formed over decades without proper paperwork. “Earlier, many mosque committees did not collect or preserve documents from donors, buyers, or local authorities. These gaps cannot be rectified in two days. This is why we need more time,” he said.
The background includes the chief minister’s letter, which mentioned technical issues on the portal. The portal launched on June 6, but the list of Telangana mandals became available only on October 6. He said the process was further slowed by repeated glitches. He also said mutawallis lacked digital skills and that century old waqf records remained scattered and needed verification.
He said the state government supported transparent documentation of waqf lands. He stressed that the Union government must extend the deadline to prevent errors and reduce anxiety. He said every waqf property needed to be recorded properly and added that the present timeline made this difficult.
