- Atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh alarm Assam CM Sarma
- Atrocities against Hindus linked to border security concerns
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has voiced serious concern over atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, warning that the developments could have implications for India’s northeastern region. Reacting to recent reports from the neighbouring country, he said incidents of violence against the Hindu community have intensified and cannot be ignored. He also linked the situation to long standing border and security challenges faced by Assam and other northeastern states.
Speaking on the issue, the Chief Minister referred to disturbing reports, including the alleged burning alive of a Hindu man in Bangladesh. He said such incidents have shaken the conscience of the region. “We are all seeing what is happening in Bangladesh. Hindus are being subjected to severe atrocities, and there are disturbing incidents that have shaken the conscience of the region,” he said, expressing deep concern over the situation.
Meanwhile, Himanta Biswa Sarma also raised alarm over statements reportedly made by certain leaders currently in power in Bangladesh. He alleged that these leaders have openly spoken about their intention to bring India’s northeastern region under their control. Responding strongly, he said, “Such statements are dangerous and irresponsible. We are observing the situation in Bangladesh with deep concern.” He added that these remarks, combined with violence against minorities, create serious regional anxiety.
The Chief Minister then pointed to Assam’s historical experience with cross border infiltration. He said the state has faced the impact of infiltration from across the Bangladesh border at various points in time. According to him, unchecked infiltration has demographic, social, and security consequences, especially for border states. “Infiltration has affected Assam at different times. That is why we must keep a very strong watch on the entire issue,” he said, stressing that current developments make vigilance even more important.
Later, he underlined the need for heightened alertness along the international border and closer monitoring of the situation. He said Assam and the rest of the Northeast must remain cautious as the regional scenario continues to evolve. He also noted that peace and stability in neighbouring countries are vital for harmony in border areas. However, he cautioned that extremism, violence against minorities, or hostile intentions toward India’s territory would be firmly dealt with.
Reiterating his government’s position, Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam would continue to work closely with central agencies to ensure border security and internal stability. “We need to remain more vigilant than ever,” he said, adding that national security and the protection of indigenous interests remain top priorities.
