Hydroponic Weed Seizure | Hyderabad / Bhubaneswar, Dec. 31: A hydroponic weed seizure ahead of New Years Eve was carried out by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, where drugs worth ₹3.93 crore were recovered from an Indian passenger arriving from Bangkok.
Based on specific intelligence, DRI officers intercepted the passenger soon after arrival at the international airport. During a detailed examination of the baggage, officials detected suspicious concealment methods used to smuggle narcotics. A total of four packets containing a greenish, lumpy substance were recovered during the search.
Hydroponic weed seizure reveals sophisticated concealment methods
During inspection, two packets wrapped in black polythene were found hidden inside cardboard chocolate boxes. This method was used to prevent detection by airport scanning machines. Meanwhile, the remaining two packets were concealed in the false bottom of the passenger’s carry on luggage. Officials found that the suspected contraband was converted into paste form and hydraulically pressed to allow seamless placement inside the false compartment.
Later, officers prised open the false bottom of the bag and recovered the concealed packets. Upon testing, the substance gave a positive result for cannabis. The total quantity of hydroponic weed recovered from the baggage was 3.93 kilograms.

According to officials, the seized hydroponic weed has an approximate illicit market value of ₹3.93 crore. Following the recovery, DRI officers arrested the passenger under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. The investigation was carried out in line with legal procedures.
The seizure comes at a time when enforcement agencies across the country have intensified surveillance ahead of New Years Eve. Authorities remain on high alert to curb drug trafficking and prevent the circulation of narcotics during festive celebrations. Officials reiterated that strict action would continue against those involved in drug smuggling and related offences.
