Hyderabad: Over 2,730 Motorists Booked For Drunk Driving On New Year Eve
Hyderabad, 01 January (Maxim News): Drunk driving enforcement across Hyderabad and its suburbs led to the booking of 2,731 motorists on New Year’s Eve, marking a five percent decline compared to 2,873 cases recorded last year. Police officials said the reduction indicates growing awareness among motorists. However, they stressed that the night was not free of tragedy, as two fatal road accidents were reported in the Cyberabad and erstwhile Rachakonda commissionerates, though neither was directly linked to New Year celebrations.
Within the Hyderabad commissionerate, police booked 1,198 cases, down from 1,415 in 2024. The highest number of violations were detected under DCP III limits, which alone accounted for 490 cases. Malakpet emerged as the largest hotspot with 125 cases, followed by Santosh Nagar with 63. Chandrayangutta and Saidabad recorded 49 and 44 cases respectively, while Falaknuma reported the lowest with nine cases. Mirchowk police booked 15 cases during the drive.
Under DCP I limits, police registered 392 cases. S.R. Nagar stood out with 111 cases, the second highest for any single police station in the city. Begumpet and Punjagutta reported 52 cases each, Trimulgherry booked 49, and Banjara Hills recorded 26 cases. Meanwhile, DCP II limits accounted for 316 cases, led by Chilkalguda Traffic Police Station with 56 cases, followed by Kachiguda with 47 and Chikkadpally with 45. Marredpally, Bowenpally, and Narayanaguda reported zero cases.
Hyderabad: Around 1000 Traffic Personnel On Ground
The special drive saw the deployment of around 1,000 traffic personnel across 217 key junctions, supported by seven additional platoons. Intensive checking continued at 120 locations until 6 am.
In the erstwhile Rachakonda commissionerate, police booked 605 motorists. Traffic Zone I accounted for 316 cases, with the Malkajgiri division alone contributing 260 cases. Uppal recorded 126 cases, the highest for any single station in the commissionerate. Traffic Zone II recorded 289 cases, led by the L.B. Nagar division with 238.
Age wise data showed most offenders belonged to the 21–30 and 31–40 age groups. Two wheelers accounted for the majority of violations. Police also flagged extreme intoxication levels, with the highest BAC recorded at 550 mg/100 ml in Vanasthalipuram.
In Cyberabad, police booked 928 drunk driving cases and deployed 55 special teams. Senior officials said enforcement would remain strict, warning that even a single instance of drunk driving can turn fatal.
