  • India Pakistan nuclear plants pact continues despite tensions

The two countries exchanged official lists of nuclear plants through diplomatic channels, reaffirming a mechanism that has remained in place for decades despite strained bilateral relations.

According to the available information, India and Pakistan exchanged the details to ensure that nuclear installations are not targeted. The State Department said the information was shared to deter attacks on nuclear facilities. This annual exchange has continued even at times when ties between the two neighbours have remained tense. Therefore, the latest exchange holds importance in the context of regional security and established protocols.

Meanwhile, relations between India and Pakistan have seen serious strain in recent times. After the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindhur, there was no proper relationship between the two countries. However, despite these developments, both sides fully shared information related to their nuclear plants. This step highlights the separation of nuclear safety measures from broader political disagreements.

Later, officials confirmed that the exchange followed the framework of an agreement signed on December 31, 1988. Although the agreement was signed in 1988, it came into force in January 1991. Under this pact, both countries committed to sharing information on nuclear power plants every year. The annual exchange takes place on January 1 without exception, as part of the agreed process.

This year’s exchange marks the 35th time that India and Pakistan have shared such information. The first exchange of nuclear facility lists took place on January 1, 1992. Since then, the process has continued regularly for about three decades. Therefore, the latest exchange maintains continuity with past practice and reflects adherence to the agreement.

Officials indicated that the lists were exchanged through diplomatic channels, following established norms. While political and security challenges persist between the two countries, this mechanism remains operational. It focuses only on nuclear safety and risk reduction. As a result, the annual sharing of nuclear plant information continues to be one of the few consistent points of engagement between India and Pakistan.
