The recent protests in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal have led to the change of governments. The latest Gen Z protests are also ongoing in Iran. People there have taken to the streets due to rising inflation and a falling currency. These protests first started in the country’s capital Tehran and have now spread across the country. The governor of Iran’s Central Bank has also resigned due to the economic crisis. Protests have been going on there for the past four days.

Police are using tear gas to disperse protesters in many places. The scenes related to this have gone viral on social media. Moreover, the government has called the protesters for talks. But to no avail. Students from 10 universities are participating in these protests. They are shouting slogans against the Supreme Leader Khamenei’s government. They are demanding the death penalty for dictators.

Inflation in Iran has now reached 40 percent. Due to this, the prices of essential commodities have increased dramatically. It is noteworthy that as of Wednesday, the value of one American dollar was 1.38 million rials. When Central Bank Governor Mohammad Reza Farjeen took office in 2022, the value of the currency was 4,30,000. Its value has fallen sharply within three years. In this process, the people there are extremely angry with the government. Sanctions by Western countries have also caused Iran to deteriorate to this situation.

In 2015, one dollar was worth 32,000 rials. In the past ten years, it has reached 1.38 million rials, which is a sign of how dire the situation has become. An average worker in Iran earns only $100 (about Rs. 9,000) per month. This money is barely enough to buy basic necessities and food. Iran relies heavily on imports. On the other hand, inflation has skyrocketed due to sanctions on its oil.

On the other hand, the Iranian government has increased taxes to 62 percent in the 2026 budget. It has also estimated inflation at 50 percent. There is criticism that doing this is robbing the people. Due to the economic crisis, the money that people have saved for years is being spent carelessly. Currently, there are situations where they cannot buy food and medicine. On the other hand, there are frequent interruptions in drinking water and electricity supplies. Not only the poor, but also the middle class people living in cities are facing serious difficulties.

The Iranian government is also trying to negotiate with the protesters. It is also preparing to suppress the protesters. Iranian Prosecutor General Mohammad Movahedi Azad has issued warnings that he will respond appropriately if peace and security are disrupted. He said that there is no problem if the protests are peaceful. On the other hand, government sources are alleging that foreign intelligence agencies are behind the protests taking place in Iran.

Meanwhile, the war between Iran and Israel in 2025 also dealt a huge blow to Iran. The Israeli attacks destroyed Iran’s defense system and nuclear facilities. The public comments by people like the Israeli defense minister that Khamenei should no longer exist caused a sensation. On the other hand, Khamenei is currently 86 years old. He is reportedly ill. There is also an ongoing internal struggle among the Iranian rulers over who will succeed Khamenei. Many experts say that if the protests in Iran intensify, there is a chance that Khamenei will step down. On the other hand, others argue that it is impossible to overthrow the Khamenei government.
