Municipal elections fuel political churn in Telangana towns
Municipal elections | Hyderabad, Jan. 5: Municipal elections have created a charged political atmosphere across urban areas, alongside Sankranti festival celebrations.
As the state government informed the Election Commission about its readiness, election preparations gathered pace.
Consequently, the Election Commission accelerated its work, especially the ward wise finalisation of voter lists.
With both the government and the Election Commission moving swiftly, political cadres in towns became active at once.
Earlier, parties expected municipal polls after parishad elections. However, the government reversed that plan and decided to hold municipal elections first.
Therefore, local leaders began focusing on the draft voter lists released on the first of this month.
Aspirants are closely checking voter strength in their wards. They are also analysing caste wise vote distribution and possible reservations.
At the same time, leaders are assessing who may enter the race, who may emerge as rivals, and what chances they hold personally. As a result, intense calculations are underway at the ward level across parties. Municipal elections drive ticket race and MLA pressure
Meanwhile, discussions on election spending have also intensified. Even before the official schedule, leaders are meeting party workers and supporters. They are estimating campaign costs and discussing how much they can afford.
Therefore, aspirants are busy arranging financial resources. This process has triggered visible political buzz in several wards.
Municipal elections
Municipal elections will be held on party symbols. Because of this, leaders are making efforts to gain the support of sitting MLAs. Many are reminding MLAs of promises made during the Assembly elections. Some are also urging party leadership to prefer loyal local leaders over recent entrants from rival parties.
Meanwhile, Congress and BJP have started preparatory meetings at the constituency level. BRS is also planning similar meetings soon.
Candidate selection has emerged as a sensitive task. Parties are considering strong leaders who are willing to join if tickets are assured.
However, competition within the ruling party is high. Therefore, MLAs, in charges, and former MLAs face pressure while finalising candidates.
Recent sarpanch election results added to the concern. After those results, the party leadership reportedly cautioned several ruling party MLAs. Leaders believe that poor performance in municipal elections could impact political futures.
Meanwhile, BJP and BRS are intensifying efforts to expand their influence, setting the stage for a tough contest.
