Parliament Budget Session Begins Jan 31, Budget on Feb 1
- Parliament Budget Session opens with President address
- Union Budget 2026-27 to be presented by Nirmala Sitharaman
The Parliament Budget Session will begin on January 31, marking the formal start of the annual financial exercise. President Draupadi Murmu will address both Houses on the first day of the session. This address will set the tone for the proceedings ahead. Soon after, attention will shift to the Union Budget, which Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present on February 1.
This year’s Budget presentation has drawn special attention. For the first time, the Union Budget will be presented on a Sunday. February 1 falls on a Sunday, yet the government has decided to go ahead with the presentation on the same day. This decision has sparked discussion, as such an event has not happened before. Many are closely watching this break from convention.
Meanwhile, the Finance Minister will present the annual Budget 2026-27 in the Lok Sabha. The government has confirmed the date despite doubts and debates around holding the Budget presentation on a holiday. However, officials have made it clear that the schedule will remain unchanged. Therefore, Parliament will function on Sunday to allow the Budget presentation.
In the past, Budget presentations have taken place on holidays, though not exactly in this manner. Last year, the Budget session was held on February 1, which fell on a Saturday. Even earlier, former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented the Budget on Saturdays and Sundays on three occasions. However, presenting the Budget on a Sunday remains a first, making this year’s session unique.
Since the BJP government came to power under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, presenting the Budget on February 1 has become a set practice. The first such presentation on this date took place in 2017. Since then, the trend has continued every year. This approach allows the government to plan and allocate funds before the end of the financial year in March. Therefore, even though February 1 is a Sunday this year, the government has chosen not to alter the schedule.
Later, discussions and debates on the Budget are expected to follow in both Houses. Lawmakers will examine proposals and raise concerns as per parliamentary procedure. Meanwhile, public interest remains high, as the Budget Session plays a key role in shaping the country’s economic direction for the coming year.
