According to a recent government memo, the mandatory Telugu subject will not apply to Class X students during the academic year 2026-27. At present, the rule also does not apply to Class IX students in the current academic year 2025-26. Therefore, students studying Class IX this year remain exempt from Telugu as a compulsory subject. However, the exemption does not cover all classes uniformly.

Meanwhile, the government clarified that students currently pursuing Class VIII must study Telugu when they enter Class IX in the next academic year. Officials said this distinction follows earlier policy timelines. Therefore, while older batches continue to receive relief, younger batches will move under the revised framework for language education.

In a memo modifying an earlier order, Education Department Secretary Yogita Rana clearly outlined the government’s decision. She said, “The government hereby extends the time period for implementation of Telugu as the compulsory subject for students studying Classes IX during the academic year 2025-26 and students of Class X during the academic year 2026-27 of all managements in the State.” The memo applies to schools under all managements.

Officials explained that the decision followed petitions filed by non Telugu speaking students in the High Court. These students sought exemption from studying Telugu as a compulsory subject. Therefore, the government reviewed the matter and decided to extend the exemption period once again. Earlier, the government had already granted similar relief for the academic years 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Meanwhile, the School Education Department issued directions to its regional joint directors of school education and district educational officers. The department asked them to inform all schools about the decision. It also instructed officials to submit a compliance report after communicating the order. The move aims to ensure uniform implementation across the State.
