Relief For Parents: Fee Control Act To Come Into Effect From The Next Academic Year?

Hyderabad, Jan 18 (Maxim News): The government has decided to prevent private schools in the state from charging exorbitant fees from parents in the name of tuition fees. For this, it is ready to bring the Fees Regulation Act into effect. The regulatory act has been framed to this extent. The government has decided to discuss this act in the cabinet meeting to be held after the municipal elections and bring it into effect from the next academic year.

However, private educational institutions have raised objections to this. In this context, the government has decided to allow private schools in the state to increase tuition fees by 8 percent every two years. If they want to increase it more than that, they will have to get the approval of the state-level commission appointed by the government. It is known that a cabinet sub-committee was formed in July 2024 with Sridhar Babu, Seethakka and Ponnam Prabhakar on education sector issues.

The committee has already met twice and discussed the fees. Later, the government appointed the Telangana Education Commission. The Education Commission, which studied the control of fees, submitted a report to the government on January 24 last year under the name of Telangana Private Unaided School Regulatory and Monitoring Commission Draft Bill-2025. The cabinet sub-committee discussed this and submitted the highlights to the Chief Minister. The main point in this is to allow an 8 percent fee hike once every two years.

Meanwhile, in 2017, the then government appointed the Acharya Tirupati Rao Committee in view of the objections raised in the past regarding the increase in fees. The committee suggested that the fees could be increased by 10 percent every year. However, the Telangana Education Commission recommended that the government be given the opportunity to increase fees annually based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). However, recently, the education department officials have formulated a policy to increase the fees by 8 percent every two years. If the commission approves, they have provided the flexibility to increase it more than that.

However, the management of private schools is demanding that fees be increased every year. In this context, several school owners, under the leadership of Teachers MLC Malka Komaraiah, were recently scheduled to meet with the Chairman of the Cabinet Sub-Committee, Sridhar Babu… but the meeting was postponed in the wake of discussions between the owners. Some owners say that in many states, there is a system of increasing fees every year. While inflation is increasing by 5-6 percent every year… they are questioning how an 8 percent increase every two years is sufficient. The school owners say that they have to pay rent every year and increase the salaries of teachers. Although engineering and other higher education colleges are increasing fees every three years… the school owners are questioning whether there is a management quota there and those seats are not being given at the fee fixed by the government. In this context, the management of private schools is preparing to approach the court if the meeting with the cabinet subcommittee and the discussions are not successful. (Maxim News)
