Supreme Court Issues Notice To Telangana Speaker

Hyderabad, Jan 19 (Maxim News) : The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar in a politically sensitive case related to alleged defections of BRS MLAs, triggering fresh debate in state politics.

The notice came while hearing a petition filed by BJP Legislature Party leader Alleti Maheshwar Reddy. He accused the Speaker of defying earlier court directions in deciding disqualification petitions against MLAs who allegedly defected from the BRS.

Maheshwar Reddy challenged the recent decision of the Speaker granting a clean chit to seven MLAs facing defection allegations. He argued before the apex court that the Speaker failed to act in accordance with judicial orders and delayed decisions on disqualification pleas.

A bench led by Justice Sanjay Karol heard the matter and issued notices to the Speaker, seeking a response to the allegations.
The court asked the Speaker to explain the process followed in dealing with the disqualification petitions and the basis for granting relief to the MLAs concerned.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court ordered that Maheshwar Reddy’s petition be tagged with a similar petition filed earlier by BRS Working President KTR. Both petitions relate to the same issue of MLA defections and the Speaker’s role in handling the cases.

The bench noted that both matters involve identical legal questions. Therefore, it decided to hear them together. The court then adjourned further hearing in the case to February 6.

The development has added momentum to the ongoing political debate in Telangana.

The issue of party defections has remained contentious, especially after several MLAs shifted political allegiance. Opposition parties have repeatedly accused the Speaker of delaying decisions and protecting defectors. However, the Speaker’s office has not yet responded publicly to the Supreme Court notice.

The next hearing is expected to bring more clarity on the legal position and the future course of action regarding the disqualification petitions. (Maxim News)
