Phone Tapping Case | Hyderabad, Jan. 20: BRS MLA and former minister Harish Rao appeared before the Special Investigation Team on Tuesday in connection with the Phone Tapping Case that triggered major political controversy in Telangana.
Harish Rao attended the inquiry at Jubilee Hills Police Station after receiving notices under Section 160 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Harish Rao reached the police station at around 11 am. Police did not permit his advocate Ramachandra Rao to accompany him inside. This led to brief arguments between party leaders and police personnel at the venue.
The SIT team, headed by senior IPS officer VC Sajjanar, questioned Harish Rao based on statements recorded earlier in the investigation.
These include statements given by officials during custody and a statement by a private news channel managing director, Shravan Rao.
Investigators reportedly focused on Harish Rao’s alleged role in directing phone surveillance activities.
Phone Tapping Case Probe Intensifies
During questioning, Harish Rao submitted copies of earlier High Court and Supreme Court judgments to the SIT.
The inquiry relates to a case registered in March 2024 following a complaint by State Intelligence Bureau officials after the change of government.
The SIT has already questioned several officials and is preparing to file a final chargesheet. Investigators are now examining the alleged involvement of political leaders.
Central to the probe are allegations that certain phone numbers were tapped during the Munugode by election period.
Officials are also questioning Harish Rao about his alleged links with accused officials Radhakrishna Rao and Prabhakar Rao.
The SIT is seeking clarity on who issued instructions for phone tapping and who acted as the main conspirators in the case.
Harish Rao’s appearance before the SIT is his first in this matter. Meanwhile, the duration and outcome of the questioning remain keenly watched in political circles.
