KL Deemed to be University Wins CII–SR Water Award

Hyderabad: KL Deemed to be University has won the “Water Stewardship” category at the first edition of the CII–SR Industrial Climate Action Competition. The Confederation of Indian Industry Southern Region organised the competition. The organisers announced the results during the second edition of the Energy Transition Summit. The summit took place on January 30, 2026, in Chennai. The award recognised institutions that showed measurable impact in climate action and sustainability.

The recognition placed KL Deemed to be University among leading institutions working on responsible water use. The award ceremony formed part of the summit’s prize distribution event. Commander Gurumoorthy Gangadharan, Senior Director Planning and Development, received the award. Dr. Kanneganti Jyothishya Brahma Chari, Associate Dean Planning and Development, KLEF, also received the honour on behalf of the university.

KL Deemed to be University earned the award for its integrated and technology driven water stewardship model. The model follows the 4R framework of Reduce, Recharge, Recycle, and Reuse. The campus operates a wastewater recycling system with a capacity of 2,180 KLD. This system meets over 54 percent of the campus water demand. Advanced sewage treatment technologies, including MBBR and ARBiT, support the system. These technologies improved water recovery efficiency from 53 percent to 74 percent.

Meanwhile, the university strengthened groundwater sustainability through rainwater harvesting. The campus has 32 rainwater harvesting pits. These pits have a recharge capacity of around 3.7 lakh litres per day. The initiatives also include real time water monitoring and efficient irrigation systems. As a result, the university achieved a 54 percent reduction in building water use. It also recorded 42 percent savings in landscape irrigation. In addition, the campus maintains a green cover exceeding 10.6 lakh square feet.

The organisers followed a rigorous evaluation process before selecting winners. The assessment covered innovation, strategic alignment, measurable environmental impact, implementation effectiveness, and scalability potential. Therefore, the award reflected both planning and execution.

Commenting on the achievement, Er. Koneru Satyanarayana, President, KL Deemed to be University, said, “At KL, sustainability is embedded in the way we plan and operate our campuses. Water stewardship is central to our vision of future-ready education, where environmental responsibility and academic excellence progress together. This recognition reinforces our commitment to building resilient, self-sustaining campuses that serve as models of responsible development.”

The honour adds to the university’s record of national recognition. KL Deemed to be University has received awards from the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Water Digest, CII–SR, and AICTE. Later, the university stated that it will continue setting benchmarks in sustainable and climate resilient campus development.
