Budget 2026-27: Rs. 10,000 Crore For Health Sector

Hyderabad: The Union Budget 2026-27 has allocated Rs. 10,000 crore to the health sector, aiming to make India a global biopharmaceutical hub. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the launch of the “Biopharma Shakti” scheme to boost domestic manufacturing of biologics and biosimilars. The initiative seeks to reduce dependence on imports and make life-saving medicines more affordable for patients.

The government will establish three new National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research and modernize seven existing institutes. This move is expected to enhance research, training, and production capabilities in the biopharma sector. It will support the domestic production of key medicines used to treat life-threatening diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

Affordable medicines and key drug production

Several important drugs will see price reductions under the budget. These include Trastuzumab for breast cancer, Osimertinib for lung cancer, Durvalumab for lung and bladder cancer, and Pembrolizumab for advanced cancers. Additionally, Nivolumab, Ibrutinib, Rituximab, Palbociclib, Ribociclib, Avelumab, Cetuximab, Panitumumab, Olaparib, Bevacizumab, Atezolizumab, Cabozantinib, and Lenvatinib are included to treat various cancers, including blood, skin, thyroid, liver, and ovarian cancers. By promoting local production, the government aims to lower costs significantly.

Expansion of medical infrastructure

The budget also emphasizes medical infrastructure. A network of 1,000 accredited clinical trial sites will be established, and five regional medical hubs will support research and training. Three new AIIMS institutions will be set up, while mental health facilities and AYUSH institutions will receive further support. District hospitals will be upgraded, and emergency wards expanded to improve accessibility nationwide.

“Our government’s goal is not just to build hospitals, but to provide quality healthcare to every common man at an affordable price,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. The budget positions India to emerge as a leading international player in biopharma, medical research, and healthcare services.
