Assam reported the highest number of fatalities at 199. Meanwhile, Odisha recorded 56 deaths and Uttarakhand reported 23. The data highlights a serious public health concern. Health experts have linked many of these Food Poisoning Deaths to unsafe food preparation and improper storage. They pointed to institutions and venues that serve large groups as key risk areas.

Multiple Food Poisoning Incidents Reported in 2026

In 2026 alone, Telangana has witnessed multiple incidents of suspected food contamination. Nearly 250 individuals have reportedly been affected so far. These incidents have raised fresh concerns over food safety standards in schools and hostels.

One recent case occurred on February 6 at the Government SC Girls Hostel in Bellampalli in Mancherial district. Around 40 students fell ill soon after dinner. Several complained of nausea and dizziness after consuming rice served at about 7:30 pm. Students alleged that their concerns were initially ignored and that timely medical help was not arranged.

According to students, when they asked for an ambulance, the hostel warden hesitated, reportedly fearing disciplinary consequences. Some students claimed that tablets were distributed and an unqualified practitioner was called to administer injections instead of seeking immediate hospital care. Other students said they were served rice and dal, and some noticed worms in the food toward the end of the meal. They alleged that their complaints were not taken seriously until several students began vomiting, which caused panic among staff.

Later, parents were informed. Then, affected students were shifted to a nearby hospital for examination and treatment. Doctors treated the students, while parents demanded accountability from hostel authorities.

In another incident on January 30, 38 students from the Government Primary School in Bodiyathanda village in Konijerla mandal were hospitalised following suspected food poisoning. Among them, 10 students were reported to be in critical condition at that time. These recurring Food Poisoning Deaths and incidents have intensified calls for stricter hygiene monitoring in educational institutions across Telangana.
