Delhi/Hyderabad, Feb 13 (Maxim News): Tariq Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party won a landslide victory in the Bangladesh parliamentary elections. Indian Prime Minister Modi congratulated Tariq Rahman on Friday in a tweet on X. It can be considered a new turning point in India-Bangladesh relations. India sees the victory as a ‘reset’ button. New Delhi hopes that the uncertainty created after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government will end and bilateral relations will improve with a stable government.
After the collapse of Sheikh Hasina’s government there, Bangladesh’s relations with India were completely damaged. Recently, under the caretaker government led by Yunus, attacks on minors there have increased. Moreover, Bangladesh joined hands with Pakistan and acted against India by saying, “Muslim, Muslim Bhai, Bhai.” Now, with Tariq Rahman’s party winning there, good days are coming for India. Let’s now see what are the favorable factors for India if the Bangladesh Nationalist Party comes to power.
India-Bangladesh relations have been strained for some time now, during the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. Now that a democratic government has been formed, there is a possibility of peace on the borders. The fact that Prime Minister Modi has already congratulated Tariq Rahman is a positive sign.
During the previous (2001-2006) BNP rule, there were concerns that Bangladesh had become a platform for anti-India forces. However, in the current elections, Tariq Rehman has distanced himself from pro-Pakistan forces (like Jamaat-e-Islami) which is a relief to India. Bangladesh’s cooperation is crucial for India in suppressing terrorism in the North-East.
Tariq Rahman has made positive statements regarding the security of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. His assurance that Bangladesh belongs to everyone and that minorities will be safe is a diplomatic win for India.
Connectivity: India is getting transit facilities through Bangladesh to its northeastern states. The new government will continue these and trade will improve.
Teesta Waters Treaty: If this dispute is resolved, economic cooperation between the two countries will increase further. Tariq Rahman, despite following the “Bangladesh First” policy, wants equal and respectful relations with India.
Amid reports that the interim government is moving closer to Pakistan and China, the BNP victory gives India an opportunity to regain its footing in its neighbour. Although Tariq Rehman has declared that he will keep an equal distance between Delhi and Rawalpindi, cooperation with India is inevitable due to historical and geographical ties. (Maxim News)
