Hyderabad: The issue of Engineering College Fees in the state has not fully settled even as the Telangana Admissions and Fee Regulatory Committee approved revised tuition structures for the 2025-28 block period. The committee allowed 63 private engineering colleges to increase fees. At the same time, it retained old fees in 70 colleges and decided to reduce tuition fees in nearly 20 colleges.

The Telangana Admissions and Fee Regulatory Committee finalized the Engineering College Fees for 152 colleges and submitted the list to the Telangana government a few months ago. Once the government issues a GO on the fee fixation, the new fees will take effect from the current academic year. These revised fees will remain valid until the 2025-28 block period ends.

Meanwhile, the committee reduced fees in about 20 colleges compared to previous years. Reports indicate that the reduction ranges from Rs.10,000 to Rs.50,000 in some institutions. In contrast, 36 colleges received hikes of up to Rs.10,000. Another 18 colleges saw increases between Rs.10,000 and Rs.20,000. Further, nine colleges recorded hikes ranging from Rs.20,000 to Rs.35,000. However, in 70 colleges, the committee decided to continue the existing fee structure without any increase.

However, several engineering college managements have expressed dissatisfaction with the TAFRC decisions. They are reportedly considering approaching the High Court against the committee’s orders. College representatives argue that fee reimbursement dues have piled up. They also state that operational costs have increased sharply. According to them, reducing fees while faculty salaries and maintenance charges are rising will affect the quality of education. Some managements claim that the method adopted by TAFRC was not scientific and are exploring legal options.

On the other hand, several student unions have staged protests. They allege a lack of transparency in the fee hike process. They claim that officials approved increases for some colleges without proper inspections. Allegations have also surfaced regarding the involvement of higher education department officials in TAFRC decisions.

Meanwhile, the state government is reviewing the final recommendations sent by TAFRC. After the finance department grants approval, officials may release the GO in the coming days. Once the GO is issued, colleges are likely to begin their next course of action.

For poor and middle class students, especially those seeking admission in colleges where fees were reduced, the revised Engineering College Fees offer significant relief.
