Madhya Pradesh, June 25: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has filed an application before the Madhya Pradesh High Court expressing regret over remarks made during a 2018 election rally that led to a defamation case filed by Kartikeya Singh Chouhan, son of Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
In his application, Rahul Gandhi stated that his comments were not intended to target Kartikeya Singh Chouhan personally. The matter is scheduled to be heard by Justice Pramod Kumar Agarwal.
Rahul Gandhi Seeks Relief in Defamation Matter
The case traces back to an election rally held in Jhabua in 2018, where Rahul Gandhi referred to issues linked to the Panama Papers and mentioned Kartikeya Singh Chouhan during his speech.
Following the remarks, Kartikeya Singh Chouhan approached the MLA MP Special Court in Bhopal, alleging damage to his reputation and seeking legal action.
The trial court later issued summons directing Rahul Gandhi to appear. Subsequently, Rahul Gandhi moved the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking relief and requesting dismissal of the defamation proceedings along with a challenge to the summons.
The latest application expressing regret has now become part of the ongoing proceedings before the High Court.
Meanwhile, the BJP IT Cell criticised Rahul Gandhi’s move and questioned the basis of naming Kartikeya Singh Chouhan during the speech. Party leaders alleged that public comments should be supported by evidence.
The matter remains under judicial consideration.
