Hyderabad, August 31 (Maxim News): Telangana is moving to position Hyderabad as India’s global knowledge hub through partnerships with leading universities in the United States and Europe. The initiative follows a recent visit by a Telangana Rising delegation to the United Kingdom and the United States.
The delegation included Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu and senior state officials. The US leg of the visit took place from August 19 to 29, while the delegation held discussions in the UK as part of the broader initiative.
The proposed partnerships cover offshore campuses, executive education, research centres and specialised courses. The University of London and Northeastern University are expected to explore establishing offshore campuses in Hyderabad.
The state said the University of London campus would mark a major expansion of the institution’s presence in India. Northeastern University, based in Boston, is also exploring an offshore campus at Bharat Future City.
Harvard University has expressed an intent to offer short term executive education programmes in Hyderabad. These programmes would target senior government officials and corporate professionals through the Dr MCR HRD Institute.
Global Universities to Explore Hyderabad Partnerships
The London School of Economics and Political Science and the School of Oriental and African Studies have also held discussions with the Telangana delegation. Both institutions are expected to send teams to explore course offerings and offshore classrooms in Hyderabad.
The discussions may also cover industry interaction, teaching methods and classroom models. Their faculty could also take part in specialised programmes in the city.
Meanwhile, Oxford University is exploring the possibility of establishing shared research centres and Centres of Excellence in Telangana. The state also held discussions with representatives of MIT, Cambridge University, Imperial College London and London Business School.
The proposed model could bring faculty from leading global universities to Hyderabad. Students and working professionals could then access specialised courses without travelling abroad.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy reviewed the progress after the overseas visits. He directed officials to oversee the implementation of the global knowledge hub plan.
The Chief Minister said the initiative would support Telangana’s long term economic vision. He said the state aims to become a $1 trillion economy by 2034 and a $3 trillion economy by 2047.
Revanth Reddy also said the initiative would benefit young people across Telangana and India. He urged students and young professionals to use the opportunities created through these partnerships.
Education and Skills Push
The state government has also linked the knowledge hub initiative with its wider education and skills agenda. Revanth Reddy, who holds the education portfolio, has identified education, skills and sports as major priorities.
The government is developing Young India Integrated Residential Schools and a Young India Physical Education and Sports University. It is also upgrading ITIs into Advanced Technology Centres and strengthening polytechnic education.
IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said Hyderabad already has a strong knowledge economy. He pointed to the city’s software, pharmaceutical, life sciences and research sectors.
According to Sridhar Babu, stronger links with global universities could support the growth of Global Capability Centres and other companies in Telangana. He also linked the initiative with the state’s efforts to develop skilled workers for manufacturing and other sectors.
Senior officials said classrooms at the Dr MCR HRD Institute are being redesigned for executive and short term programmes. The state plans to use the campus for programmes offered through global academic partnerships.
Officials also said the global knowledge hub could later expand to Bharat Future City. The proposed facilities could include academic programmes, research activities and institutional collaborations.
The state has also directed officials to include a separate track on global educational institutions and sports facilities at the Invest Telangana Global Summit. The summit is scheduled for December 7, 8 and 9. (Maxim News)
