Hyderabad: KP Unnikrishnan Passes Away at the age of 90 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala. The former Union Minister had been suffering from old age problems for some time. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed grief over his death.
KP Unnikrishnan was a senior Congress leader. He represented the Vadakara parliamentary constituency as a Member of Parliament from 1971 to 1996. During his long political career, he held key positions and remained active in national politics. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Kerala’s political history.
He also served as a Union Minister during the tenure of late former Prime Minister VP Singh between 1989 and 1990. In 1990, during the Gulf War, he secretly met the then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. At that time, he played a key role in bringing back about one and a half lakh Indians, risking his life. Although all the cabinet members advised against it, it was his discussions with Saddam Hussein that helped bring back the Indians.
Born on 20 September 1936 in Koyilandy, Kozhikode, into a family of freedom fighters, KP Unnikrishnan was drawn to politics at an early age. He supported Indira Gandhi in his early years. However, after the Emergency, he distanced himself from her due to differences of opinion with Sanjay Gandhi.
Meanwhile, leaders and party workers remembered his long public service. His role during the Gulf War remains one of the defining moments of his career. Therefore, his contributions to Parliament and the Union government continue to be recalled by colleagues and supporters.
