Hyderabad: Domestic LPG prices increased sharply on Saturday, March 8, raising cooking gas costs in Hyderabad and other cities. Oil companies raised the price by Rs 60 per cylinder. As a result, households across India will now pay higher rates for domestic cooking gas.
The hike marks the second increase within a year. The rise follows pressure from higher global energy prices linked to the West Asia crisis. India is the world’s third largest energy consumer, therefore global price shifts often affect domestic fuel rates.
Domestic LPG prices rise in Hyderabad and other metros
According to the Indian Oil Corporation website, a non subsidised 14.2 kg LPG cylinder now costs Rs 913 in Delhi. Earlier, consumers paid Rs 853 for the same cylinder.
Meanwhile, the price in Hyderabad has reached Rs 965 after the latest hike. Other metro cities also recorded new rates. The LPG cylinder now costs Rs 939 in Kolkata, Rs 928.5 in Chennai, and Rs 915.5 in Bengaluru. These revised rates came into effect immediately after the announcement.
Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries will also face the same increase. However, they continue to receive a subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder. After the subsidy, beneficiaries will pay Rs 613 for a 14.2 kg cylinder. The subsidy applies to up to 12 refills in a year.
Commercial LPG rates and regional price differences
Commercial LPG cylinders also show varied prices across metro cities. In Hyderabad, a commercial cylinder now costs Rs 2105.50. The price stands at Rs 1988.50 in Kolkata, Rs 2043.50 in Chennai, and Rs 1958.00 in Bengaluru. In Delhi, the commercial cylinder rate is Rs 1884.50.
However, sources said petrol and diesel prices are unlikely to increase immediately. Fuel retailers are expected to absorb the impact. The three marketing companies Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd reported strong profits earlier this year.
Retail petrol and diesel prices have remained unchanged since April 2022. During this period, retailers absorbed losses when crude prices rose and earned profits when prices fell.
Domestic LPG prices in Hyderabad remain the highest among metros due to local taxes. These taxes vary across states and cities, which leads to price differences.
Within Telangana, Nirmal district currently records the highest gas rates. The domestic LPG cylinder price in the district is Rs 990. Meanwhile, the commercial cylinder price there stands at Rs 2148.5.
