- BRS MLCs protest mining row, demand probe and dismissal
- Council chaos as Chairman suspends BRS MLCs for protests
Hyderabad, March 30: The Telangana Legislative Council saw high drama on Monday as Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy suspended BRS MLCs for the day. The action followed unruly protests over alleged mining irregularities linked to Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy.
The confrontation began earlier in the day. BRS MLCs took out a protest rally from Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial at Gun Park to the Legislative Council. They raised slogans demanding the Minister’s dismissal and a probe into alleged irregularities involving Raghava Constructions. They also carried placards reading “Save Democracy” and “Ponguleti Must Resign.” Moreover, they sought a House Committee or an inquiry by a sitting High Court judge.
However, tension escalated when the members tried to enter the Council premises with placards. Marshals intervened and restrained them. This led to a brief scuffle. Despite repeated warnings, the protesting members continued their demonstration.
Inside the House, the situation worsened soon after proceedings began. BRS members rushed towards the podium. They raised slogans and demanded an adjournment motion to discuss the issue. Meanwhile, they repeated their demand for a House Committee probe and the Minister’s removal from the Cabinet.
As disorder continued and appeals for restraint failed, the Chairman invoked rules to suspend the protesting MLCs for the rest of the day. Marshals then escorted them out. Later, the House was briefly adjourned.
Meanwhile, the suspended MLCs continued protests outside the Council Hall. Police were deployed in large numbers. The legislators were detained and shifted to Telangana Bhavan in buses.
Later in the day, a BRS delegation led by party working president KT Rama Rao is scheduled to meet Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan. They plan to submit a representation regarding alleged irregularities and illegal activities of Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and seek action.
