Azharuddin | Hyderabad, April 22: Uncertainty over Telangana Minister Mohammad Azharuddin’s continuation in the Cabinet has intensified after the Supreme Court on Wednesday deferred hearing on the Governor quota MLC appointments case to July 22.
A bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath heard the matter and later adjourned it after the Attorney General sought more time. He informed the court that the Governor required additional time to decide on the fresh recommendations sent by the Telangana government.
The case relates to appointments under the Governor quota to the Telangana Legislative Council. The state government had earlier forwarded names for nomination. However, no final decision has yet emerged from Lok Bhavan.
Sources said the latest recommendations include Professor K Kodandaram and Mohammad Azharuddin. As a result, political attention has now shifted to Azharuddin’s ministerial future.
Azharuddin Future In Focus
Under constitutional provisions, a minister who is not a member of the legislature must secure election or nomination within six months. Therefore, Azharuddin is required to enter the legislature before the deadline at the end of this month to continue in office.
Because of that timeline, the Supreme Court adjournment has triggered fresh suspense in political circles. If the nomination process does not move forward before the deadline, questions may arise over his continuation as minister.
Meanwhile, the Governor has not announced any decision on the pending names. Therefore, the spotlight now remains on move by Lok Bhavan.
The development has also sparked wider discussion within Telangana political circles, as the Governor quota nominations have remained unresolved for months.
However, the state government is expected to closely monitor the issue in the coming days. At the same time, political observers believe any quick decision from the Governor could immediately end the uncertainty.
For now, the Supreme Court adjournment has only extended the suspense, while Azharuddin’s ministerial future remains under watch.
