Delhi/Hyderabad, May 2: Millions of mobile users across India received a loud “Extremely Severe Alert” message on Saturday as part of a nationwide test of a new disaster warning system developed by the government.
What Happened?
- Mobile phones suddenly rang loudly with a distinct alarm tone
- Devices vibrated even in silent or Do Not Disturb mode
- A flash message appeared on screens warning of an “Extremely Severe Alert”
The alert, however, was only a test drill and not an actual emergency.
New Alert System Explained
The system, developed by Centre for Development of Telematics, is based on a Cell Broadcast Warning System integrated with the Sachet platform.
Key features:
- Works without internet using mobile networks
- Overrides silent/DND settings to ensure visibility
- Sends alerts instantly to large populations simultaneously
Government’s Objective
The initiative was launched under the supervision of Amit Shah along with the Communications Ministry to:
- Test the effectiveness of emergency alerts
- Ensure citizens can be warned quickly during disasters
- Strengthen India’s early warning infrastructure
When Will It Be Used?
Officials said the system can be crucial during:
- Earthquakes
- Tsunamis
- Lightning strikes
- Gas leaks or industrial accidents
- Other natural or man-made disasters
No Need to Panic
Authorities clarified that:
- The alert was only a mock drill
- Citizens should not panic
- Such tests help improve preparedness and response systems
