Hyderabad, June 26: The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT Hyderabad) has marked the release of Roots & Wings: Building India’s Deep Tech Ecosystem, the authorised biography of Padma Shri Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Chairman of the institute’s Governing Council and one of India’s leading technology visionaries.
Written by entrepreneur and ecosystem builder Saloni Malhotra, the book documents Dr. Jhunjhunwala’s journey over four decades and highlights his contributions to India’s technology and innovation landscape.
The biography follows his return to India in 1981 with a vision to build world class technology capabilities in the country. It explores his role in shaping India’s deep tech ecosystem through research, entrepreneurship and institution building.
Roots & Wings traces India’s deep tech journey
As a professor at IIT Madras, Dr. Jhunjhunwala promoted stronger collaboration between academia and industry. His work contributed to advances in telecommunications, electric mobility, energy systems and startup development. Through mentorship and research leadership, he influenced generations of innovators and entrepreneurs.
At IIIT Hyderabad, Dr. Jhunjhunwala has played an important role in guiding the institute’s focus on advanced research, innovation and social impact. His leadership continues to support the institute’s mission of developing technology solutions for complex challenges.
Speaking on the occasion, IIIT Hyderabad Director Prof. Sandeep Shukla said Dr. Jhunjhunwala’s contribution to India’s technology and innovation ecosystem has remained significant for more than four decades.
He said the institute has benefited from his leadership as Governing Council Chairman and welcomed the publication as an account of both his personal journey and the growth of India’s deep tech ecosystem.
