Hyderabad, May 4: Mango prices crash in Andhra Pradesh has hit farmers hard, even as consumers benefit from sharply lower fruit rates.
Prices of Totapuri mango dropped from Rs 1.10 lakh per tonne in February to Rs 4000 to Rs 7000 now. Similarly, premium Banganapalli mango prices fell from Rs 1.75 lakh to around Rs 50000 to Rs 60000 per tonne.
Several factors have driven the sharp fall. Exports have stalled, reportedly due to disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz. In addition, diesel shortages and trader syndicates have affected market movement.
As a result, mango stocks have flooded local markets. Therefore, consumers are getting fruits at lower prices across the state.
Mango Prices Crash In Andhra Pradesh Amid Export Halt
However, the mango prices crash in Andhra Pradesh has left farmers under stress. Many growers say they are unable to recover even basic cultivation costs.
Earlier, prices fetched lakhs per tonne. Now, they have fallen to a few thousand rupees. Consequently, farmer incomes have taken a severe hit.
While consumers welcome cheaper mangoes, growers warn that such price drops could affect future cultivation decisions. The situation has raised concerns over the financial stability of mango farmers in the state.
