Hyderabad, May 5: Kakatiya temple demolition has sparked protests after an 800 year old Shiva temple was razed in Warangal district. Members of the New Telangana History Forum urged the government to halt further destruction of heritage structures.
The incident took place in Khanapur mandal, where the temple belonged to the historic Kakatiya era. According to reports, authorities demolished the structure to make way for an integrated school.
Kakatiya temple demolition draws sharp criticism
Meanwhile, forum convener Sreeramoju Haragopal questioned the decision to demolish the temple. He said constructing such a structure took years, while demolishing it took only a day. Therefore, he asked why the temple could not remain within the school premises.
In addition, he raised concerns about the lack of clarity on official permissions. He said authorities have not confirmed whether approvals were taken from the Archaeology and Endowments departments.
Moreover, the forum stated that the temple fell under the jurisdiction of the State Archaeology Department. However, a bulldozer reportedly leveled the structure without following due process.
Local residents also expressed concern over the demolition. They questioned the authority under which the contractor acted. At the same time, they demanded accountability from officials involved.
Furthermore, heritage activists warned that such actions could damage Telangana’s cultural legacy. They stressed that monuments from the Kakatiya period hold historical and architectural value.
As a result, calls for a detailed inquiry have intensified. The forum urged the government to protect remaining heritage sites and ensure strict adherence to preservation laws.
Officials are yet to issue a detailed statement on the incident. However, public pressure continues to grow for transparency and corrective measures.
