Warning To LPG Customers: New Scam Of Fake OTPs

internet/Hyderabad, May 11 (Maxim News): Cyber criminals are launching a new type of cyber fraud targeting LPG consumers across the country. In this context, public sector oil companies have issued warnings. Companies like Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) have alerted consumers. They have revealed that criminals are trying to steal OTP and DAC (Delivery Authentication Code) from customers by sending fake SMS and WhatsApp messages in the name of gas cylinder delivery.

Recently, cybercriminals have been calling customers posing as gas agency representatives. It seems that they are asking for OTPs with words like ‘Update your KYC, link Aadhaar, or else the connection will be disconnected’. Oil companies said that some people are being sent fake messages similar to official LPG delivery messages and asked to reveal the code in them. They revealed that official delivery messages always come in the name of the respective companies. They said that there will be only a 4-digit OTP in it. They clarified that the code should be revealed only to the relevant staff at the time of cylinder delivery. They advised not to respond to anyone asking for OTP through phone calls, WhatsApp or other suspicious links.

However, cyber experts suggest that users should book gas and update their KYC through official apps and websites. They suggest that users should be alert to WhatsApp messages and suspicious links coming from personal mobile numbers. If they have been scammed, they should immediately call the 1930 helpline. It is said that if a complaint is filed during the ‘golden hour’, there is a greater chance of freezing the money that has been defrauded. (Maxim News)
