Kolkata/Hyderabad, May 19 (Maxim News): In an interesting and unexpected development in West Bengal politics, Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Jahangir Khan, who had earlier made sensational remarks saying ‘Pushpa.. will not decrease’ (Jhukega Nahi), has unexpectedly withdrawn from the election fray. His decision to withdraw from the re-polling of the Falta Assembly constituency in the state, which was scheduled to be held on May 21, has become a hot topic of discussion just 48 hours before that.

Before withdrawing from the election race, Jahangir Khan approached the Calcutta High Court. He applied for anticipatory bail, saying that the police were likely to arrest him before the polling. Khan alleged in his petition that the police had registered false FIRs against him on fabricated charges. He asked the court to clarify how many cases were registered against him across the state and what the charges were. A single judge bench headed by Justice Saugat Bhattacharya accepted the petition and adjourned the further hearing to Monday.
A video of Jahangir Khan himself announcing his withdrawal from the elections is currently going viral on social media. However, the official authenticity of this video is yet to be confirmed.
TMC says ‘We don’t know either’
The TMC leadership expressed surprise over its own candidate withdrawing from the contest at the time of voting. Party spokesperson Arup Chakraborty said on the matter, “We have received information that Jahangir Khan is withdrawing from the Falta by-election. However, we are not yet aware of the clear reasons behind his decision to take such a drastic step.”
BJP says ‘we will bend the flower’
In the past, during the campaign, Jahangir Khan used dialogues from the movie to boast that he would not be defeated. The BJP candidate from Falta constituency reacted strongly to this and said, “We will put Jahangir Khan in jail after May 4th.. We know how to bend that flower.” In this context, there is a strong campaign in political circles that Khan withdrew from the contest due to fear of arrest. (Maxim News)
