Telangana Heatwave Claims 9 Lives As Temperatures Cross 46°C

Hyderabad, May 21: Telangana is reeling under severe heatwave conditions after temperatures crossed 46 degrees Celsius in several districts, with at least nine people reportedly dying due to sunstroke-related incidents.

The highest temperature was recorded at Dilawarpur in Nirmal district at 46.5°C on Wednesday. Districts including Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Hanamkonda, Jagtial, Khammam and Nizamabad also witnessed extreme temperatures above 46°C.

According to reports, six deaths linked to heatstroke were reported from the combined Karimnagar region. The victims included elderly persons, farmers and a differently abled man. Additional deaths were reported from Mahabubabad, Mulugu and Narayanpet districts.

IMD Issues Red Alert Over Telangana Heatwave

The India Meteorological Department has issued a Red Alert for Telangana as temperatures continue to remain 5 to 6 degrees above normal levels.

Officials warned that severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist for the next two days. Residents of Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Khammam, Nizamabad and Nalgonda districts have been advised to take precautions.

Doctors urged elderly people, children, pregnant women and individuals with existing health conditions to avoid stepping outdoors during afternoon hours.

The extreme heat also triggered unusual incidents in parts of the state. A motorcycle reportedly caught fire while moving through a forest area in Mancherial district. In Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, smoke emerged from an RTC bus tyre, though the driver managed to prevent a major mishap.

Authorities advised people to stay indoors during peak daytime hours, drink sufficient water and avoid direct exposure to sunlight.
