Hyderabad, May 30: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged Telangana phone tapping case is intensifying its investigation as it prepares to file the final chargesheet. As part of the process, investigators are examining the role of several officials involved in key administrative decisions linked to the case.
Sources indicate that former Telangana Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar has come under scrutiny during the investigation. SIT officials are reportedly collecting documentary evidence related to administrative orders issued during the tenure of former Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) chief T. Prabhakar Rao, who is a key accused in the case.
The development marks a significant stage in the high profile phone tapping investigation that has triggered political and administrative debate in Telangana.
Phone Tapping Case Investigation Focuses on Key Appointment
According to investigation records, Prabhakar Rao retired from service in June 2020. At the time, the then Director General of Police reportedly recommended that his services be retained as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in view of intelligence requirements.
However, SIT investigators are examining subsequent government orders that appointed Prabhakar Rao as Chief Operations Officer (COO) in the Special Intelligence Branch. Officials claim the post did not previously exist within the police department structure.
Investigators are reviewing whether the appointment complied with existing service and cadre regulations governing retired IPS officers.
The SIT is reportedly examining files, official notes, and administrative approvals connected to the appointment process.
Questions Raised Over Service Rules
According to officials familiar with the investigation, IPS cadre rules permit limited post retirement assignments under specific conditions. The SIT is reportedly reviewing whether the three year appointment granted to Prabhakar Rao complied with applicable regulations.
Investigators are also examining whether changes were made to the original proposal submitted by the police department before the final government order was issued.
Sources said the SIT has recorded observations regarding the administrative process followed while creating and filling the position.
However, no court has determined criminal liability against Somesh Kumar in connection with these allegations. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced any final conclusions regarding his role.
Final Chargesheet Expected Soon
The SIT is expected to complete its findings and submit a final chargesheet after examining all relevant documents, witness statements, and administrative records.
The alleged phone tapping case has emerged as one of Telangana’s most closely watched investigations due to the involvement of senior police and administrative officials.
Legal experts note that the final chargesheet and subsequent court proceedings will play a crucial role in determining accountability and establishing whether any rules or laws were violated.
