Hyderabad, May 30: The Goshamahal Police busted an alleged online cricket betting racket in Hyderabad and arrested a man accused of organizing illegal betting activities through digital platforms.
The accused, identified as Venugopal Sharma, was arrested during a police raid conducted in Begum Bazar on May 29. Officers also seized a mobile phone and Rs 3,000 in cash from his possession.
Hyderabad Online Cricket Betting Case Under Investigation
Acting on credible information, police raided a premises in Begum Bazar and found the accused allegedly operating an online cricket betting network using mobile communication platforms.
According to investigators, Venugopal Sharma was running the betting operation under the name “Godavari Associates.” He allegedly collected betting money from punters through intermediaries and coordinated betting activities using digital channels.
Police said the accused is a habitual offender and has been involved in betting related cases in the past.
Based on evidence gathered during the raid, the Goshamahal Police registered a case under Crime No. 193/2026 and launched a detailed investigation into the betting network and its possible connections.
After his arrest, the accused was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. Investigators are examining digital evidence and financial transactions to identify other individuals linked to the operation.
The action is part of Hyderabad Police’s ongoing drive against illegal online betting and gambling activities, which have increasingly shifted to digital platforms.
Police warned that online betting can result in financial losses, cyber fraud and legal consequences. Officials urged citizens to avoid unauthorized betting applications and report illegal gambling activities to law enforcement agencies.
Authorities reiterated that strict action will be taken against those involved in organizing, promoting or participating in illegal betting operations.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of senior officers from the Golconda Zone and Goshamahal Division with support from the Goshamahal Police Station team.
