New Delhi, June 2: The Centre is preparing to introduce ethanol based cooking stoves for commercial use, a move that could provide relief to users of commercial LPG cylinders and help reduce dependence on imported crude oil.
Grain Ethanol Manufacturers Association (GEMA) President C K Jain said ethanol manufacturers have developed a proposal for commercial cooking stoves and submitted it to the government for consideration.
Ethanol Stoves Set for Commercial Use
Jain said efforts are underway to address initial challenges related to fuel distribution and refilling infrastructure. Once these issues are resolved, ethanol stoves can be rolled out for commercial applications.
According to him, ethanol can serve as an alternative to LPG in commercial kitchens and contribute to reducing India’s dependence on crude oil imports.
He noted that even a modest reduction in crude oil imports would be a significant achievement for the country’s energy security goals.
Jain also said ethanol blending will play a major role in India’s long term energy transition strategy. He added that the initiative could help shield the country from future energy shocks and fluctuations in global crude oil prices.
The proposal comes at a time when commercial LPG cylinder prices have been rising amid concerns over global crude oil supply disruptions.
Industry experts believe alternative fuels such as ethanol could support cleaner energy adoption while reducing import costs in the coming years.
